Guía del profesor · Teacher guide (≈ 55 min)
Pacing guide: Grammar Practice · Presentational · Grammar: Preterite vs. imperfect: interrupted actions (mientras… cuando…) · Product: Exit ticket
- Repaso rápido (6 min): Poll, then read the three patterns aloud. Act out one: a student 'reads' at the desk (imperfect) while you drop a book (preterite). Class narrates: «Ana leía cuando el libro se cayó.»
- Accidentes (8 min): Vocabulary cards with audio; students mime each verb. Point out the reflexive pronoun and the article with body parts (me rompí el brazo).
- Práctica en contexto (10 min): Camila's story fill-in, individually. Then volunteers read the full story aloud with correct verbs.
- Juego (7 min): Match background → interruption. Then pairs invent one new pair and share it with the class.
- Tarea en parejas (10 min): Role cards: A had an accident; B asks questions (¿Qué hacías cuando…? ¿Qué pasó después?). 2-minute rounds, switch roles, then draw another card.
- Escribe (9 min): Short paragraph (70+ words) about a real or invented accident. Remind students to include at least two «mientras/cuando» sentences.
- Boleto de salida (5 min): Exit MC + confidence check.
Builds directly on Day 31 (escenario vs. acción). The past progressive from Day 27 (estaba + -ndo) is recycled as an alternative for the background action. Avoid the accidental «se» (se me cayó) for now — keep the focus on reflexive accident verbs in the preterite. Be sensitive: students may choose an invented accident instead of a real one.

1Repaso rápido: el fondo y la interrupción
Tres patrones
| Patrón | Ejemplo | English |
|---|---|---|
| Mientras + imperfecto, pretérito | Mientras yo jugaba al béisbol, empezó a llover. | While I was playing baseball, it started to rain. |
| Imperfecto + cuando + pretérito | Yo jugaba al béisbol cuando empezó a llover. | I was playing baseball when it started to rain. |
| Estaba + -ando/-iendo + cuando + pretérito | Yo estaba jugando al béisbol cuando empezó a llover. | I was (in the middle of) playing baseball when it started to rain. |
| Mientras + imperfecto, imperfecto | Mientras yo jugaba, mi papá miraba el partido. | While I was playing, my dad was watching the game. (two actions at the same time) |
Piensa en una línea larga y una flecha. ➖➖➖ ⚡
La línea larga (la acción en progreso) = imperfecto. La flecha (la acción corta que interrumpe) = pretérito.
Si las dos acciones son líneas largas al mismo tiempo, las dos van en imperfecto.
Picture a long line and an arrow: the long line (action in progress) is imperfect; the short arrow that interrupts is preterite. Two simultaneous long actions are both imperfect.
2Vocabulario: los accidentes
Los accidentes 🩹
Verbos reflexivos en el pretérito
| caerse | lastimarse | perderse | |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | me caí | me lastimé | me perdí |
| tú | te caíste | te lastimaste | te perdiste |
| él / ella / usted | se cayó | se lastimó | se perdió |
| nosotros | nos caímos | nos lastimamos | nos perdimos |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | se cayeron | se lastimaron | se perdieron |
Note the spelling of caerse: se cayó, se cayeron (i → y between vowels). Choqué and tropecé have spelling changes in the yo form (-qué, -cé).
