By Valentina Ortiz, Springfield. For my Spanish class, I researched four festivals from the Spanish-speaking world. They are all joyful and crowded, but each one shows something different about its community.

La Tomatina (Buñol, Spain). It's the strangest festival I know. On the last Wednesday of August, thousands of people throw ripe tomatoes at each other for an hour in the town's streets. It started in the 1940s as a game among young people. Today tickets are sold because thousands of tourists arrive from all over the world every year. It's less old than the other festivals, but it's as famous as they are.

Inti Raymi (Cusco, Peru). It's the oldest festival of the four. The Incas celebrated the Sun god, Inti, in June, when winter begins in the Andes and the harvest ends. Today, every June 24, the ceremony is re-enacted at Sacsayhuamán, ruins above the city. There is a procession with music, traditional clothing and speeches in Quechua. It's more solemn than a carnival: it's a moment to remember Andean history.

Barranquilla Carnival (Colombia). For me, it's the most fun festival. During the four days before Ash Wednesday, the city dances cumbia. There are floats, masks and costumes like the Marimonda, a character with a super long nose. UNESCO declared it heritage of humanity in 2003. It mixes Indigenous, African and European traditions, and that's why it's as diverse as Colombia.

Las Fallas (Valencia, Spain). From March 15 to 19, the neighborhoods display enormous figures made of cardboard and wood. Some are taller than a five-story building, and many criticize politicians and society with humor. Every day at two in the afternoon there is a mascletà: my aunt, who lives in Valencia, says it's the loudest noise of her life! On the last night, almost all the figures are burned in big bonfires. The artists work for months, but everything turns into fire in one night.

Which one is the best? It's hard to decide. La Tomatina is the craziest, Inti Raymi is the most historic, carnival is the most musical and Las Fallas are the most artistic. But they all have something in common: people come together to celebrate their identity.
