My name is Gabriela Rivera and I live in Holyoke. Every summer I visit my grandparents in Puerto Rico, and this year I arrived just in time for the Night of San Juan, June 23. Saint John the Baptist is the patron saint of the capital, which bears his name.

That afternoon, my family got together at Isla Verde beach with food, music and beach chairs. My grandmother brought rice with pigeon peas and my uncle made skewers on a small grill. There were more than a hundred families on the beach, and everyone greeted each other as if they were neighbors. My cousins and I put on white clothes, because my grandmother says it's our family's tradition.

At midnight, the most exciting part began: people throw themselves backward into the sea several times. It's said that this way you leave behind the bad luck and problems of the year. My grandfather, who is seventy-five, threw himself into the sea as many times as I did. And he had more fun than anyone!

When I was a little girl, I celebrated the Fourth of July in Holyoke with my parents. We watched the fireworks and ate hamburgers. Both holidays are celebrated in summer and are as family-centered as they are fun. However, the Fourth of July is more patriotic and noisy, while the Night of San Juan is more spiritual: it's a moment to renew yourself.

Now, for me, the Night of San Juan is the best night of the summer. Next year, I want to bring my friends from Holyoke so they can see how it's celebrated on the island.
