When I was a girl, we spent every December in Cuenca, Ecuador, at my grandparents' house. The house was old and cold, but it was always full of people: uncles and aunts, cousins, neighbors and even the neighborhood dogs. My grandfather Rafael was the center of everything. He was tall, thin and a big joker, and he had a laugh you could hear from the street.
In Ecuador, the «Año Viejo» (Old Year) is celebrated on December 31. Families make a big figure out of old clothes, paper and sawdust, and at midnight they burn it to say goodbye to the year and start over. My grandfather and I always made the figure together. He sewed the clothes and I painted the face.
The year I turned ten, everything was different. My grandfather was sick and couldn't get out of bed. I was very sad because I thought we weren't going to have a figure. Then my grandfather called me to his room and told me: «This year, you're the artist. Make it yourself and bring it to me so I can see it.» I spent the whole afternoon working with my cousins. When we finished, the figure had my grandfather's hat and a huge smile. We showed it to him and he laughed so hard that he started to cough.
At midnight, while everyone was eating the twelve grapes in the street, my grandfather was watching from the window. When the figure started to burn, he raised his hand and waved to me. It was the last Año Viejo we celebrated together; my grandfather died in March.
Now I live in Worcester and I've celebrated the Año Viejo here with my mom for six years. Here people don't burn figures in the street, so we make a small paper one and burn it carefully in the backyard. My American friends think it's a strange tradition, but for me it's the most special one of the year. Every December I paint the figure's face and put a hat on it. My mom says it's the perfect tribute to Grandpa Rafael.

Listen to an interview between Tomás, a student at Chelsea High School, and the school nurse, Ms. Patricia Rivas. You will hear it twice.
Enfermera: Primero, bebe mucha agua y no tomes bebidas energéticas.
