  1. Instrucciones (4 min): Read the instructions and the poll on test strategy. Remind students: no devices except the lesson page, no translators.
  2. Interpretivo: lectura (8 min): Students read the article silently. Do not reveal the teacher translation. Glosses stay available.
  3. Interpretivo: preguntas (12 min): Students choose answers (on their device or on a paper answer sheet). Reveal answers only after everyone is done, or after collecting the paper sheets.
  4. Interpersonal (20 min): Pairs draw a role card and talk for 3 minutes without notes while you circulate with the rubric (score 3–4 pairs per round, rotate cards). Waiting pairs complete the short written response on paper.
  5. Presentacional breve (6 min): Students who have finished speaking write the 60–80 word response on paper.
  6. Reflexión (5 min): Self-assessment scale and the essential-question reflection.

Unit 6 IPA: interpretive reading + interpersonal conversation (per the pacing guide), with an optional short written response. The article is original; «Playa Esperanza» and «Tortugas del Mañana» are fictional, modeled on community sea-turtle nesting projects on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. Leatherback (baula) and green (verde) turtles do nest on that coast: leatherbacks roughly March–July, greens roughly July–October, hence «entre marzo y octubre». Red lights are «turtle-friendly» (less disruptive), not harmless, so the article says «molestan menos». «para que + subjuntivo» in the last paragraph is glossed (recognize only). Use the exam reveal button only after all students have answered. For the interpersonal section, score with the rubric; if time is short, finish speaking pairs at the start of Day 121.

Interpretivo

  3. Presentacional breve: escribes una respuesta corta (60–80 palabras).

Al final, reflexionas sobre tu progreso.

Today you show what you can do in Spanish. Three parts: interpretive (read an article, answer 8 questions), interpersonal (3-minute conversation with a partner, no notes), short presentational (60–80 word written response). Then reflect on your progress.

Idea clave
  • Trabaja solo/a en las partes 1 y 3. No uses traductores.

Work alone in parts 1 and 3; no translators. Answers are revealed by the teacher at the end. In the conversation, use the subjunctive, the future and follow-up questions.

Playa Esperanza is a small town on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Between March and October, when night falls, very special visitors arrive: sea turtles. Leatherback and green turtles come out of the sea to lay their eggs in the sand. That's why the neighbors say that in Playa Esperanza «the nights belong to the turtles».

Fifteen years ago, the situation was very different. Some people took the eggs out of the nests to sell them, and the lights of the new hotels confused the newly hatched baby turtles, which walked toward the street instead of going to the sea. Every year fewer turtles were born.

Then a group of neighbors formed the association «Turtles of Tomorrow». Today, young people from the town and volunteers from many countries patrol the beach every night. When they find a nest in danger, they take the eggs to a protected hatchery. In addition, the association convinced the hotels to use red lights, which bother the turtles less. «It's necessary that tourists turn off their flashlights on the beach,» explains Yorleni, a 19-year-old guide. «I hope everyone understands that the beach is the turtles' home.»

The project also changed the town's economy. Before, many young people left for the capital to look for work. Now some work as ecotourism guides and others sell food and crafts to visitors. «It's not true that protecting nature is bad for the economy,» says don Ricardo, one of the founders. «Here nature gives us work.»

However, there are still problems. The sand receives more and more plastic from the sea, and the sea level is slowly rising. Scientists doubt that the beach will be the same in fifty years. But Yorleni is optimistic: «My children will see turtles on this beach. We will do everything possible so that they keep coming back.»
