The people in the reading (Yesenia, Andrés, Profesora Lugo) are fictional. Facts used: Spanish is the most widely spoken language in Massachusetts after English; Lawrence has a Latino majority; Massachusetts offers a State Seal of Biliteracy on the high school diploma (created by the LOOK Act of 2017); Paraguay has two official languages, Spanish and Guaraní. No statistics are given on purpose. If your school awards the Seal of Biliteracy, share the local requirements in English after the reading.

Andrés, twenty-one, works in customer service at an energy company in Springfield.
In Paraguay, Spanish and Guaraní are official languages. Guaraní is an Indigenous language, but not only Indigenous people speak it: many people of all backgrounds use it at home, on the street and with family. It's common to switch from one language to the other in the same conversation. Both languages are taught in schools.
