Unit 9 opener. No images are used in this lesson on purpose: students build the picture from the language. If you want to show real works afterward, «Las Meninas» (Velázquez, 1656) is in the Museo del Prado. Scrap paper needed for the drawing game.

Unit 9: Art, literature and identity
In this last unit we look at paintings, murals, music and poetry from the Spanish-speaking world. Essential question: How do art, music and literature express who we are? At the end you will present an art analysis or write and perform your own poem.
Artists and writers we will meet this unit.
Hacemos tres preguntas:
You can «read» an artwork like a text: What is there? Where is each thing? What does it mean or make us feel?
Think of an artwork you know (a painting, a mural in your city, graffiti, a photo). Describe it in two sentences. What's in it? Do you like it?

La pintura = a painting AND paint.

«Las Meninas» is a very famous painting by Diego Velázquez, a 17th-century Spanish painter. Today it is in the Prado Museum in Madrid. In the center there is a blond girl in a very large, light-colored dress: she is the Infanta Margarita, the king's daughter. Next to her there are two young women attending her; they are «las meninas» (the maids of honor). On the left, behind an enormous canvas, is Velázquez himself with a brush in his hand. There's a self-portrait inside the painting! On the right, in the foreground, there is a big, calm dog, and a boy puts his foot on it. In the background, a man stands in an open doorway and, on the wall, there is a mirror. In the mirror we see the king and queen. The colors are dark and soft, but the light shines on the girl. It is a mysterious work: what is Velázquez painting?
Who is in the center of the painting?
What is on the right, in the foreground?
Why do we say there is a self-portrait inside the painting?
Hay introduces something new; estar says where a known thing is. The location of people and things uses estar, not ser.
Errores comunes al describir arte. Vota: ¿mito o realidad? Common mistakes when describing art — vote: myth or fact?

«Pintura solo significa paint.»

Background = al fondo.

Por qué: Hay = there is / there are, y no cambia en plural.
