Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907, in Coyoacán, a neighborhood of Mexico City. She lived with her parents and sisters in a house painted blue: the famous Blue House. Her father, Guillermo, was a photographer of German origin; her mother, Matilde, was Mexican.
When she was six, Frida got sick with polio. She spent months in bed and afterward one leg remained thinner than the other. But Frida was a strong and very curious girl. As a teenager she studied at the National Preparatory School, one of the best schools in the country, and she wanted to be a doctor.
In 1925, when she was eighteen, Frida suffered a terrible accident: the bus she was riding crashed into a streetcar. She broke her spine and other bones. For months she had to lie in bed. Because she was bored, she started to paint. Her family gave her a special easel for painting in bed and put a mirror above it. That way Frida looked at herself and painted herself. That is how her first self-portraits were born.
In 1929 she married Diego Rivera, the most famous muralist in Mexico. Their relationship was complicated: they divorced in 1939 and married again in 1940. Together they lived for a few years in the United States — San Francisco, Detroit and New York — but Frida missed Mexico very much.
In her paintings, Frida expressed her pain, her love and her Mexican identity. She almost always wore traditional clothing, such as the Tehuana dress, and flowers in her hair. Many people said her art was surrealist, but she said she did not paint dreams but her own reality. Frida died in 1954 in the Blue House, which today is the Frida Kahlo Museum. Today she is one of the best-known artists in the world.

«The Two Fridas» is a large painting Frida made in 1939, the year of her divorce. Today it is in the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City. In the painting there are two women sitting on a bench: both are Frida. They hold hands. On the left, one Frida wears a white European-style dress. On the right, the other Frida wears a Tehuana dress, a traditional outfit from Oaxaca. Both have their heart outside their chest, and a vein joins the two hearts. The Frida on the right holds a small portrait of Diego as a child. The vein of the Frida in the white dress is cut; she closes it with surgical forceps, but drops of blood fall on her dress. In the background there is a gray sky full of clouds, as before a storm.
