Texts: José Martí, Versos sencillos, poem I, stanzas 1–2 (New York, 1891) and Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Rima XXI (Rimas, 1871): both public domain. Punctuation of Rima XXI varies by edition (some print line 3 as «¡Qué es poesía! ¿Y tú me lo preguntas?»); the words are the same. Martí's first stanza is widely known because verses from Versos sencillos were later adapted in the song «Guantanamera»; here we treat it only as a poem. «La cocina de mi abuela» is an original poem written for this lesson in the style of Versos sencillos (quatrains with ABAB rhyme); it is not by Martí. Facts: Martí (Havana 1853 – Dos Ríos 1895) lived in exile in New York for about fifteen years and died fighting for Cuban independence. Bécquer (Seville 1836 – Madrid 1870); his Rimas were published after his death by friends.

Vamos a leer poemas sobre la identidad y el amor. Un poema sobre la identidad probablemente habla de… (el lugar de origen, la familia, la lengua, la naturaleza…). Escribe dos ideas.
We'll read poems about identity and love. A poem about identity probably talks about… Write two ideas.
Yo soy un hombre sincero
De donde crece la palma,
Y antes de morirme quiero
Echar mis versos del alma.
Yo vengo de todas partes,
Y hacia todas partes voy:
Arte soy entre las artes,
En los montes, monte soy.

I am an honest man / from where the palm tree grows, / and before I die I want / to pour out the verses of my soul.
I come from everywhere, / and toward everywhere I go: / I am art among the arts, / in the mountains, I am a mountain.
Forma: estrofas de 4 versos de 8 sílabas (octosílabos). Rima ABAB: sincero / quiero; palma / alma; partes / artes; voy / soy.
Tiempo verbal: el presente (soy, crece, vengo, voy): el poeta habla de quién es siempre, no de un momento del pasado.
Form: 4-line stanzas of 8-syllable lines, ABAB rhyme. Tense: present, because the poet defines who he always is.
«From where the palm tree grows» refers to…
What does the speaker want to do before dying?
These lines suggest that the poet…
¿Qué es poesía?, dices mientras clavas
en mi pupila tu pupila azul.
¿Qué es poesía? ¿Y tú me lo preguntas?
Poesía… eres tú.

«What is poetry?» you ask, as you fix / your blue eyes on mine. / What is poetry? And you are asking me? / Poetry… is you.
La cocina de mi abuela (poema escrito para esta clase)
En la cocina de mi abuela
siempre sonaba una canción;
la olla olía a canela
y la radio era el corazón.
Yo era pequeña y miraba
sus manos llenas de harina;
ella reía y me hablaba
de su pueblo y su colina.
Hoy la cocina está vacía,
pero yo canto su canción,
y huele a canela todavía
cuando la llevo en el corazón.
My grandmother's kitchen (original poem). In my grandmother's kitchen / a song was always playing; / the pot smelled of cinnamon / and the radio was the heart. // I was little and I watched / her hands full of flour; / she laughed and told me / about her town and her hill. // Today the kitchen is empty, / but I sing her song, / and it still smells of cinnamon / when I carry her in my heart.
Metaphor: A is B (no «como»). Simile: A is like B (with «como»).
In Rima XXI, who is the speaker talking to?
What is the tone of the original poem?
«The kitchen is empty» probably means that…
